20 Totally Free Image Sources

By Michelle Shaeffer | 48 Comments

Looking for free sources for images?  Bookmark these links!

Morgue File – Usually my first choice to search because it’s easy to use, has a nice library and includes a tool to crop and resize the photos you want to use right on the site.

Stock.xchng – Big selection of images, terms vary from photo to photo.

Every Stock Photo – Library includes photos from NASA and the Library of Congress.

Dreamstime – This is a royalty free (paid) photo site but they also have a collection of free images.

Free Digital Photos – Love the way the categories are setup here, easy to browse.  Includes photos & illustrations.

Creative Commons – Here you can search Flickr, Wikimedia, and other sites for Creative Commons licensed images.

Wigflip – Wigfip allows you to generate various graphics with your own text on them.

Wordle – This site lets you create a “cloud” of words from any text or feed you’d like.  You can choose the colors, fonts and style.

Flaming Text – Set your text on fire, make it brushed metal, or try one of dozens of other effects.

Cool Text – Similar to Flaming Text but also allows you to put your text on buttons like this panic button.

Fake Magazine Cover – Put yourself (or any photo you’ve got) on the cover of dozens of different magazines.

Unprofound – Here you can search images by color, which is very cool if you need something based on color.

Free Range – Very nice selection of free photographs.

Image*After – You can find free images and free background textures here.

Photogen – Another nice catalog of photographs.

NOAA – Lots of landscapes and nature photos from NOAA.

Public Domain Photos – If you’re looking for clip art style images, try this site.  Also has photos.

WP Clipart – More clip art style images.

Uncle Sam’s Photos – More free to use photos from the US Government.

Hassle Free Clip Art – Large selection of cartoons and clip art.

Here’s some tips on how to nicely format images for your blog if you’re using WordPress:

“Free” Image Credit: ansonstock/StockFresh (Not a free image site, but my favorite royalty free image site)

Way cool video tutorial, Michelle. You are the first person who showed me how to use the advanced image settings in WP — can’t remember exactly when — but I’ve been forever grateful. Since then, my blog images are not smushed up against the text. :)

Awesome list of totally free image sources!

I discovered the great images at Morgue File a couple of years ago and I’ve really taken a liking to Flickr these days. I created some PPT slides a few weeks ago for an upcoming webinar I’m doing and several of the images are thanks to the beautiful Flickr collections from Darwin Bell.

There are so many talented photographers sharing images on Flickr. Lots of great options there.

I love how easy WP makes it to format images. :)

This is an awesome post Michelle. I love FREE stuff!

I recently paid $5 to have a load of images from a trader on fiverr. I didn’t know that I could have got all the images I need for free.

I do recognise some of them, but I confess that I didn’t actually know much about them. I will take note in future.

Thanks for the holiday wishes, David.

And I still buy images some of the time, even with free options out there. Just depends on what I need. So the Fiverr purchase may have been a great deal.

This came as an answer to my prayers (and frustrations)! I had just asked a friend on FB what resource she uses to get free photos and there you were in my email an hour later. I will bookmark this post, and each link for future reference. Thank you for being such a valuable resource for all of us in the blogisphere!

BTW, any resources for free music? Looking to weave music into a podcast/ teleseminar I’m planning for 2012.

    Hi Michelle,
Thanks for the work you did here and the video help you shared at the end. I blog regularly so would you recommend using an image site that you pay for so you don’t have to spend so long finding the image you want? I remember reading one of your posts recently where you said you only paid $1-2 per month. Would you mind giving me a little of your opinion? Thanks and have a great day! Amy

Hi Amy, I use http://www.stockfresh.com and the images there are $1-$2 or so depending on which package you purchase and what size images. The smallest size they have generally works fine for blogging. :)

Thank you Michelle for sharing your secret collection of image resources. Our blogs, college project and business presentation is really useless without images and graphics. Without graphics and images document/blog looks boring and poor.
