27 Ways to Calm Anxiety and Find Your Happy Place

By Michelle Shaeffer | 9 Comments

“Shake it off!”

“Put on your big girl pants!”

How many times have we heard that advice?

Or, even told ourselves… “just get over it” or “pick yourself up already!”

Life as an entrepreneur is stressful at times.

Sometimes it’s push you to your limit stressful…

I ran across this analogy in an Inc article quoting Toby Thomas, CEO of EnSite Solutions (No. 188 on the Inc. 500), that explains it really well:

It’s like a man riding a lion.

“People look at him and think, This guy’s really got it together! He’s brave!” says Thomas.

“And the man riding the lion is thinking, How the h*ll did I get on a lion, and how do I keep from getting eaten?”

The same qualities that inspire us to jump into our own businesses also put us at risk for taking on too much, getting overwhelmed, or constantly questioning our abilities and our value.

We tend to work too many hours and push ourselves harder than any “boss” could ever get away with.

The worst boss I’ve ever worked for?  Definitely myself!

How about you?

Give yourself space to be human. Your heart and passion make a difference, not your perfection.

You can put your heart 100% into what you do, be 100% valuable, and change 100% of the lives you come into contact with – without being anywhere near 100% perfect!

So, next time that anxiety starts to creep up and you feel like you’ve found yourself riding on a lion you can’t control… here are 27 ways to kill the anxiety and find your happy place again:

I love the quote..yes it hits home. Thanks for the tips. Sometimes all it takes is looking at that special email file where you keep all of your praises from former clients. The ones that tell you they would be lost without you..those keep me going!

Michelle Shaeffer, you earned a lifelong reader of your articles. Great analogies used in this article. Being a self-employed boss can be overwhelming and cause a lot of unwanted stress. Releasing the chemicals, endorphins and oxytocin’s helps a lot. Numerous ways are discussed well by you. Listening to calm music and taking a jog in the morning can help tremendously.

Anxiety can present as fear, restlessness, an inability to focus at work or school, finding it hard to fall or stay asleep at night, or getting easily irritated.
