How to Get a Better Alexa Ranking (Infographic)

By Michelle Shaeffer | 40 Comments

What’s your ranking at www.Alexa.com?  You can find out by typing your domain into the search box.

Want a better (lower) ranking?  I went on a quest about a year ago to find out what it’d take to get my ranking below 100,000 and I kept a journal of sorts noting what I did and how it seemed to affect my ranking.  You can read about it here: How I Got My Alexa Ranking Under 100,000.

Then I shared two follow up posts:

  • Your Winning Alexa Game Plan
  • What’s Your Two Cents on Alexa?

And since discovering Piktochart, the info was just waiting to be turned into an infographic!

Because of their measuring methodology, it’s basically just guessing if you don’t have that javascript on your site or pretty good traffic from people using their toolbar. :)

That’s a very colourful infographic, I need to go play with Picktochart obviously! Pinned :)
Just a quick question, is downloading the Alexa really essential?

Thanks, Jan, I appreciate you sharing the graphic. :)

Do you mean adding the toolbar to your browser? It’s not essential but it’s helpful if you’re working to lower your ranking with them, since you can more easily see your Alexa ranking (each site’s ranking displays as you visit it, so you don’t have to go check their website) and it helps them “see” the traffic to your site, who’s linking to you, etc.

Although not very reliable, Alexa stats are one of the top numbers looked upon by advertisers. Your graphic does help a lot Michelle, thanks!

Yep, that’s probably the only really good reason to track it closely if you want to monetize with advertising. :)

Great info as always! Can you explain the Alexa toolbar and how that helps? That piece of the equation leaves me a bit befuddled (which is easy to do BTW)….

They get their stats from people running the toolbar and use that sample to project/guess traffic numbers for sites. That’s why it’s so unreliable for sites that have less traffic is that not everyone runs their toolbar so they can’t actually see all the traffic on the internet–they’re just guessing based on a small sample size (toolbar users). And that’s also why it can help if we install the toolbar and Alexa sees us visiting our websites. Because they’re “watching” it can also help them see links in since we can go visit sites that have linked to us and click through to our sites.

The exception to this is certified sites (like yours, Tor), or sites that have the javascript ranking embedded (like mine). They can see our traffic pretty accurately. :)

    Loved the infographic Michelle!

I think just going through it gives anyone an idea about how you can increase your Alexa ranking. Mine is going upwards, though it takes it’s own sweet time. :)

Guess I need to do some of the things you mentioned above to really soar. :)

    Thanks for sharing. :)

In the past 7 days my Alexa ranking has jumped 500,000 places and 50% of my traffic is from there! Who knew Alexa would become my #1 traffic source?

        cheers,

        Pete

Definitely going to do this this evening. I just need to find the HTML code in my theme. It’s a lot more complicated then I realized and I might just upload the file to my directory and call it good.

    Thanks for the tips!

If you’re running the Yoast SEO plugin, it’s got a spot in the settings for Alexa verify code. Otherwise if you know how to do FTP that’s easier. ;)

As someone with a baby website/blog this is really useful. I only discovered Alexa ratings in the last week. I have downloaded the toolbar myself and I’m looking at the other things you’ve mentioned over the next couple of days.

Driving traffic to my site would spur me along more than anything else. All hints & tips are gratefully received!

Nice tips Michelle. I’m looking forward to following your strategy for Alexa ranking improvement (and reading your newsletter).

Our Brothers-Handmade.com ranking has been improving slowly, but we’re still over 1,000,000.

Was wondering why our U.S. Ranking appears and then disappears. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

I’ve played with Piktochart, and love it. I really like how you used it to summarize a blog post. That’s a use case I hadn’t considered, but works beautifully.

Thanks for sharing, and have a great weekend.

Thank you for this! And for your detailed Alexa post from June.

I thought that I had claimed my site at Alexa years ago. Your infographic prompted me to double check. Turns out it was unclaimed!

So I claimed it, installed the toolbar & added their widget.

And I’ll work on the “Step 3” stuff in the coming weeks/months. :)

Thought it would be fun to post an update —

My Alexa traffic rank was about 447k back in mid-December.

      Now, a little past mid-January, it’s about 237k.

If I end up breaking 100k in the coming months, I’ll come back and let you know!

      Thanks again Michelle.

Haven’t hit 100k yet, but getting closer.

My ranking has been holding steady at about 145k for the last week or so (end of March).
