Is it Weird, Different, True, False…

By Michelle Shaeffer | 12 Comments

For this week’s weekend inspiration — an interesting challenge to our own perspectives and preconceived notions:

Have you run into any situations where “normal” wasn’t “normal”?

I love this video! Especially the tidbit about doctors in China only getting paid if your healthy. Wow, that’s incentive for them to treat you! We do a lot of weird things in New Hampshire that others don’t. For example, motorcycle helmets are not required. No permit is needed for kids to drive a car at the age of 15 and a half. They just need a birth certificate and an adult in the car. Live free or die is our motto. I never said any of it was smart, just bizarre. Great video and thought provoking!

Alaska tends to be a little less restrictive with many things, too, but they do require permits here. It’s so interesting how different states handle things.

I like the idea of paying Doctors when we’re healthy, too. Such a different perspective!

I’ve been a medical professional for 40 years and I’m with Suerae on this one — doctors getting paid only when you’re healthy sounds like a darn good idea to me!

People think it’s “weird” I add cinnamon to my coffee. :)

Here in Southern California, we have a “different” way of explaining distance or “how far away” a particular destination is. We never share the “number of miles away” something is — we share the “number of minutes of hours” it takes to get there. For example, if someone were to ask me, “How far away is the Rose Bowl from Arcadia (where I live)?” I would say, “It’s about 10 minutes from here”.

Great video — thanks for sharing!

My husband used to laugh at me when we first got married because I’d ask how far something was and I wanted minutes, not miles. I always thought in terms of minutes. I wonder if it’s partly an east coast/west coast thing?

Partly an east coast/west coast thing? I’d have to say, “Yep”! :))

TedTV has amazing content. Have to be careful not to get lost over there with all the fantastic presentations.

Oooh, I love this vid! Very eye opening in perspectives. Thanks for sharing this with us Michelle!

FYI – I wish American doctors and medical institutions adopted the “get rich to keep us healthy” model!!

    *wishful thinking* :-)

Me, too! I’d be a lot happier about paying my medical bills if that were the model. :)

I love TED videos – so insightful. As with the others here, and as shown by the audience applause, the doctors getting paid when your NOT sick is an awesome concept…
